A key criterion of writing-intensive (WI) courses at the University of Minnesota is that “Writing in the course is learned through revision in the course.” Many students perceive revision as an indicator of failure, not an essential and vital element in the writing process or an opportunity to re-envision their ideas. In this workshop, we’ll consider course-adaptable writing assignments and activities designed to help students become effective revisers. We’ll explore how revision works and consider instructional practices (e.g., commenting strategies, in-class mini-workshops, peer response activities, reflective memos, etc.) that enhance students' motivation to revise their drafts. We’ll also touch on ways instructors can tailor and teach effective revision activities for various stages of the writing process.
