What differentiates peer response from GenAI feedback?

Side-by-side images of students working with writing.
Image description: This AI-generated image contrasts two writing scenes: on the left, a student interacts with her laptop while seated across from another student in a Minnesota sweatshirt, also using a laptop. Both students have serious expressions and keep their eyes on their laptops. The right side shows two students interacting at a table, with a printed document between them, one of whom appears to be offering feedback to the other. Both students are smiling.

As they become increasingly integrated into our devices, GenAI tools provide ample opportunities for nearly instantaneous feedback on writing. Instructors may wonder, then, if there is still a place for peer response in the classroom.  This TWW Blog post, Is Peer Response Still Relevant in the Era of Generative AI Feedback?, details ways that peer response differs importantly from GenAI feedback and why it still matters.
