Instructors assign problem sets as homework to reinforce conceptual learning and build students' capacity to reach solutions. Unfortunately, these valuable low-stakes opportunities are occasionally undervalued by students, who fixate on “getting the right answer on question 3” rather than the wider context of learning and understanding this work is designed to promote. Two teams of instructors, from the School of Mathematics and the Department of Chemical Engineering and Computer Science, will share tools and resources they have created to turn problem sets into meaningful writing assignments. The two presentations will open a lively conversation about problem sets as a teaching and learning resource and how effective design can help change students’ orientation to their thinking, reasoning, and communication of knowledge in their fields.
